Heavy metal ditemukan oleh Band veteran Tahun 60'an Steppenwolf, dalam lagu klasiknya yang berjudul 'Born To Be Wild' (ada di baris kedua bait kedua, "dasar maniak barang remeh-remeh!")."I like smoke and lightning HEAVY METAL thunder Racin' with the wind And the feelin' that I'm under".Tapi istilah itu belum dipakai secara tepat sampai pada tahun 1970, ketika Black Sabbath merilis album perdana klasik mereka yang berjudul ' Paranoid'. Cukup banyak band Heavy metal.Dari tahun 1960-an atau bisa disebut Blues Rock seperti Led Zeppelin, AC/DC Classic metal dan disekitar 60an sampai 70'an atau disebut Classic Rock seperti Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper. Permainan Classic metal dimainkan kadang dengan Organ. Musiknya dikendalikan oleh riff yang lebih sering dimainkan dalam tangga nada minor. Vokalisnya juga terpengaruh oleh Led Zeppelin kecuali Bapak metal Ozzy Osbourne yang dipengaruhi oleh Sirene udara.Underground Metal !, Tempo lagu sangat cepat yang diusung oleh gitaris yang memainkan gitar rhytm Downstroke pada Thrash metal oleh band-band seperti Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer dan Anthrax yang dijuluki Big Four Of Thrash. Di San Francisco ada Testament dan Exodus di New Jersey ada Overkill dan Sepultura dari Brazil.Pada tahun 1990'an, underground ini lebih memasuki ke Extreme metal seperti Black metal yang diprakarsai oleh band-band cadas seperti Venom, Mayhem, Bathory, Mercyull Fate dan Death Metal yang cenderung menggunakan vokal dengan growl rendah dan banyak screamnya berkembang.Pada tahun 1991, menjadi Scandinavian Death metal oleh Entombed, Dismember, Unleashed, dan At The Gates Melodic Death metal yang berasal dari Gothenburg Swedia lalu berkembang di Finlandia dan Norwegia oleh band-band seperti Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, Disessction.
Florida Death metal adalah Turunan jenis musik Thrash metal yang berasal dari band Kreator dan Destruction melahirkan band band asal Florida yang terkesan lebih brutal yang menjadi Techical metal di pioniri oleh Cynic (kemudian menjadi berevolusi menjadi Aghora ), Atheist, Immolation, Death. Progressive Death metal yang mungkin lebih cenderung ke visualisasi dan banyak mengunakan Tradisional pun dimaklumi, Pionirnya adalah Opeth, Pestilence, Death, Novembre dan mungkin Progressive metal oleh Dream Theater.Perbedaannya dengan Power metal adalah genre ini lebih bersemangat dan vokalis genre ini kebanyakan di pengaruhi oleh Rob Halford dan Bruce Dickison band-band genre ini kebanyakan dari Eropa. Misalnya, Europe (Swedia), Iron Maiden (U.K), Helloween (Jerman). Dan Speed metal dimainkan lebih cepat sangat-sangat cepat dan bertenaga seperti Motorhead (akhir-akhir), Iron Angel, Anthrax.
